Internet Providers in Vancouver, BC
Novus is our top choice as the best home internet provider in Vancouver.
Availability is the primary obstacle, but Novus is expanding its infrastructure and reach rapidly.
The second-best and most widely available alternative is TELUS. From a technical perspective, it does well.
Specifically, it has the widest coverage and the best fibre infrastructure in Vancouver.
However, its patchy customer service track record is the main obstacle to it taking the top spot.
Both Novus and TELUS provide fast fibre connections, with Novus’s top offering clocking up speeds of up to 2,500 Mbps. TELUS edges into the rankings with a 1,000 Mbps package at a higher cost.
The cheapest home internet plans come from TekSavvy and Oxio with little to choose between these two companies in terms of speed and pricing.
However, Oxio’s customer service reviews outshine TekSavvy’s, which is a factor worth taking into account.
We are not commercially affiliated with any internet service providers. To arrive at our conclusions, we took a snapshot of what different providers offer.
We gathered data by getting their offers for several addresses around Vancouver and comparing the results.
Because different things matter to different people, we didn’t only look at price. We also analyzed each service offering based on speeds and customer service and looked into terms and conditions of service. If anything seemed unclear, we followed up with phone calls.
However, there are some limitations to our research, and it’s only fair that you should be aware of them. For example, pricing is listed as of the date of publishing and can vary. Even speed isn’t a constant. Depending on your address, you may qualify for extra service tiers or fail to qualify for the ones we analysed.
However, we do feel that this is a good overview to get you started. Once you’ve spotted deals that seem to match your needs and priorities, you can get current data that’s specific to you by following up directly with the service providers you’re interested in.
Finally, you should note that special offers are sometimes available – for example, if you opt for bundled services or are willing to sign a contract covering a specific timeframe.

Our take
Using cost, reliability, speed, and customer service as our evaluation criteria, we rate Novus as the best internet provider in Vancouver – provided their service is available in your area.
TELUS features despite its reputation for poor customer service since its infrastructure is widespread and its speeds are relatively reliable.
Following TELUS in the rankings, Oxio deserves a mention. It’s followed by TechSavvy and Lightspeed.
1. Novus
Based on our research, we nominate Novus as the best internet service provider in Vancouver.
Because it builds and owns its fibre network, it has full control over the infrastructure – bear in mind that many of the smaller ISPs have to rely on other ISPs for that.
Having this level of control means that Novus doesn’t have to rely on second-hand information if any issues arise.
This means that there’s potential for better customer service, and in our experience, Novus delivers on this.
That’s borne out by their TrustPilot reviews: a solid 3.8 stars.
At the same time, Novus offers far better deals than TELUS – but there is a downside.
Although they’re rapidly expanding their reach, Novus is only available in selected buildings.
2. TELUS
Moving to the biggest player on the West Coast, there’s the advantage of comprehensive coverage thanks to excellent fibre infrastructure.
However, the downsides are cost and customer service, which have earned TELUS a 1.3 star TrustPilot review.
3. Oxio
Oxio is a wholesale cable reseller. This means that it doesn’t have its own infrastructure. The infrastructure it uses differs depending on location, but in BC it uses Rogers/Shaw’s infrastructure.
Plus points include a wide range of packages, reasonable pricing on month-to-month contracts, and solid ratings for customer service.
However, there seem to be some issues with variable speeds and connectivity.
4. TekSavvy
Like Oxio, TekSavvy is a cable reseller offering a wide range of affordable options. The company has a reasonably good reputation for customer service, and many reviews specifically mention it as an advantage.
However, in areas with congestion during peak hours, speeds and reliability may not be all that is desired.
You’ll have to sign up for a full 12 months to get started. This gets you a reduced rate. After your first 12 months, however, you’re billed on a month-to-month rate that’s also much more costly.
5. LightSpeed
LightSpeed offers cable and fibre options in Vancouver. The company promises unlimited bandwidth, predictable, flat rate pricing and doesn’t lock users into contracts.
We initially thought that limited availability might be LightSpeed’s biggest challenge, but there are signs of trouble in paradise.
In its earlier years, the company garnered a good reputation for reliability and service. More recently, the number of complaints and dissatisfied customers seem to be mounting. While not yet matching the low customer ratings reflected in TELUS reviews, it seems to be the most problematic of the smaller providers.
LightSpeed offers both cable and fibre packages. For cable, LightSpeed diverges from its “no contracts” policy, offering a $10 reduction per month for 12-month sign-ups under its “Flash Sale” offer while falling short of terming them “contracts.”
If you decide back out of a 12-month commitment, there is a cancellation fee. Month to month packages are available with charges listed at the higher, standard rates.

What is the Average Broadband Speed in Vancouver, BC?
The average download speed in Vancouver is 211.1 Mbps and the average upload speed is 95.78 Mbps.
TELUS offers the fastest speeds, registering an average download speed of 252.97 Mbps for its PureFibre Internet x 3G plan.
However, this plan isn’t available to all. You will usually only be able to get it if you live in a newer building.
Novus takes second place in the speed rankings with its Novus Internet 2500 plan, but like the premium TELUS plan, it isn’t available everywhere.
How to Find the Best Home Internet Plans in Vancouver
We’d suggest that you begin right here, using our online tool to find out what’s available in your area. The top advantage is that you’ll be able to compare products from all the available service providers in one place.
Decide what matters to you most and rank your priorities. Low prices, speed, reliability, bandwidth, and customer service are all important criteria. Depending on how you use the internet, their relative importance to you is an individual decision.
Begin with your top criterion and rank the available offers. Then move on to your second most important measurement, and decide how different internet service providers stack up.
This will help you to spot two or three packages that match your needs and priorities.
With the options narrowed down, all that remains is to verify the details on your chosen ISPs’ websites and make your final choice.
Who Offers the Cheapest Home Internet Plans in Vancouver?
If cheap internet access is your top priority, you can’t go wrong with TekSavvy’s 30 Mbps plan at just $29,95.
It will suit a household in which up to four devices are in use, and it’s fast enough for streaming video, downloading media, or updating your social media accounts.
However, do remember that this price comes with a 12 month contract. After that, the price goes up to $57,95.
While you’re looking at low-priced home internet plans, you should take a look at Oxio. Its 30 Mbps plan has a price tag of $43.
It will cost you more in the first 12 months, but if you’re in it for the long haul, you’ll be paying less for your 30 Mbps.
Besides this, your agreement is on a month-to-month basis, so it’s easy to cancel if you move house or aren’t altogether satisfied with it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Speed: Fibre is faster than cable and offers equally good download and upload speeds. Cable upload speeds are on the slow side – about 10 percent of the download speed in most instances.
Reliability: Fibre is generally more reliable than cable.
Cost: As you’ll see from the examples above, fibre is more expensive than cable.
Availability: Cable is more widely available than fibre.
Installation: Fibre installations are more complex than cable and installation costs are higher.
TELUS and Novus currently offer the fastest internet speeds in Vancouver. Novus isn’t as widely available as TELUS.
You may have no other option than TELUS if a fast internet connection is your number one goal.
The speed you need depends on what you do online. Here’s a quick rundown:
Straightforward browsing and email: 5-10 Mbps
Streaming: 20-50 Mbps for HD streaming. For SD streaming 10-20 Mbps is enough.
Gaming: this depends on the game, but 10-20 Mbps is usually sufficient
Multiple devices: More devices means that you need faster speeds. If your household runs several devices at once, you will likely need 25-50 Mbps
Video conferencing. Uploading or downloading large files: You’ll need speeds of 50-100 Mbps.
